Featured Area Post 01: The Living Area, Spring and Courtyards

Hello everyone! It's time for Castle's first ever Featured Area Post!

So now that your characters are rested and their abilities are freshly restored, it's time to learn about what the Castle has to offer. This week?

The Living Area

Unlike the dreary sarcophagus your character woke up in, the living area is considerably more comfortable. It has beds, doors that will only open for certain people, one (or more) complete strangers of your very own–– the works! Sure the furniture may give the impression of being long-abandoned, but clear off that dust and apply a little decoupage and you've got home. Be sure to mind your manners, though! Chances are, those other people mysteriously capable of entering your room whenever they want? They'll be here for a while. Try and get along, okay?

Outside the dormitories is, you'll find, a place of infinite wonder and, curiously enough, assassins crawling all over the walls and windows. Perhaps they think they're adding to the decor. Also in the general living area, you'll find opportunities for meeting some of your most basic social needs! Various divots set into the stoney ground are ripe for whatever fires you'd like to build, conjure, summon, or whatever your preferred method of bringing on the burn. The biggest game you'll be able to catch in the surrounding area are birds and rodents, but doesn't every abandoned castle need a place for people to gather and tell stories around a fire? And if a social campfire isn't your thing, rumors of citizens interested in building a library have started floating around the Castle. Everyone interested (not just Sofia) are suggested to capitalize on this potential development! Who knows when a copy of Demons and You could come in handy?

Campfire stories and potential libraries aside, the living area is also the best place to find all of the food your character needs to survive. Sure, it's not the greatest stuff, but it's highly nutritious and will be sure to keep your character alive for as long as he or she are with us. You're free to have your characters garnish the mush with whatever they please, but we highly doubt it'll make too much of a difference. You might want to get on setting up better cooking accommodations, either through resource scavenging around the castle or asking the spring!

Nearby the living area is perhaps the most crucial place in the entire castle: the spring. The spring itself is gorgeous-- tall pillars enclose a pool of water that gives off its own unearthly glow. Goodness only knows what went into it to make it like that, but some of the residents certainly are figuring what they can get out of it. Did you know that the first item the spring ever conjured was tape? The More You Know! We advise caution in using the spring, however. Not only are you liable to get hit by a stray spell, but asking the spring for large objects like, oh, say, people, could end quite terribly! For example: certain unnamed characters are advised against summoning Chevy vehicles of any model.

Lastly, you'll want to know about the courtyards and slices of greenery sprinkled about the living area. Some of these courtyards are entirely unintentional (falling rock and crumbling walls will do that to you!) but the more purposefully-styled ones are quite beautiful. Even the hardest and most troubled of hearts will find their inner zen amongst carpets of wildflowers and long-unkempt (but no less lovely) hedge sculptures. Butterflies roam the area, too, but be careful! Like any area of the castle, there is always a shadow threat lurking about the courtyards. Specifically, you'll find winged shadows in open-air areas, and these guys can be notoriously difficult to confront on your own or even with a small party of adventurers.

Annnd that's all for now! In the future these posts will be more detailed and feature more aspects of the Castle as characters steadily uncover more of it. We'll also be asking for reports about anything unexpected your characters might encounter. This includes: puzzles, types of shadows, weird architecture-- anything you can think of!

Let us know here or at any time in the future if you have an idea you'd like to add to the Castle. In the meantime, maybe some people would like to volunteer to write for the shadow monsters and puzzle obstacles while others go exploring?
